From Oil-Stained Workshop To Working Studio

A stone outbuilding had served as a workshop for forty years. We stripped it to the walls, repaired the joists, insulated and screeded the slab, and laid engineered oak over underfloor heating — a year-round studio in six weeks.

Challenge & approach

Forty Years Of Oil Versus A Clean Oak Floor

The old slab was contaminated and 40mm out of level. We ground back the surface, laid a damp-proof membrane, poured a bonded thermal screed, and floated the oak over a low-profile heating mat — warm boards, no radiators stealing wall space.

• Contaminated slab ground, sealed, and re-leveled with thermal screed.
• Underfloor heating mat beneath floating engineered oak.
• Reclaimed boards sanded back for the lobby feature wall.
